Missed: The Wood Shop bands because I was doing merch and only had the chance to come in for Sphaèros
The first day of Cosmic Sonic Rendesvouz is in the books without any big snag. I was at the merch table and didn't have steady relief, so couldn't abandon my post to get clips of the bands at the Wood Shop the next building over. As with these megabills you get hit with a bunch of stuff that overlaps on two stages. Unfortunately, this meant I missed Casket Rats who I've been meaning to see for a bit, but I did get to see Al-Qasar which was led by one of 3 former Mirror Queen former guitarists over the festival (Satan's Satyrs and Dead Hits were the others). This was appropriate since Kenny put on the festival. Al-Qasar are a bit of a festival outlier since their guitar sound often comes from an electric saz baglama and the bands bass approach is more funk and the content more politcally oriented than the stoner-doom brand of psychedelia that most of the bands on the festival employ. Thomas Attar had to get locally based musicians since his band couldn't get visas in time to play but if you didn't know you couldn't tell, so kudos for quick NYC assemblage.
I was reminded that it had been a couple years since I last saw Atomic Bitchwax. They've been at it so long they evolved into a tight sounding machine. This years cover kickoff and closing refrain model was Edgar Winter's "Frankenstein" so they are out of the Floyd into for now.
As usual with festival posts, I'm a bit behind since it takes forever to get the links together and upload everthing, but I have at least one clip for each Meadows band and snuck in a bit for Sphaèros who replaced Freedom Hawk who had to canceled due to health issues. He had a thin room going on the same time as Dead Meadow but he got a better spot the next night after the Wood Shop lineup was reshuffled a little bit with an outdoor stage scuttled due to the weekend rain onslaught. Now I've got to help get the gear left behind on night two, so that post will come a bit later.
