Missed: Boris and the Joy
I checking in on this years version of the mighty Gogol Bordello. I was hoping to catch Boris and the Joy but the L train stuck 20 minutes at Wilson combined with a 6:45 set time made my seemingly on time leave time make me get there right when Puzzled Panther started up. I last saw them play at Baby's All Right a few years back, but I felt like I've run into Victoria and Eugene with enough regularity that the last time wasn't that long ago. Time compresses!
More than a quarter century on, Eugene Hutz has subtly evolved his vision over time. This years model is the evolution of Casa Gogol, which is a couple years into the initial vision. Whereas the Gogol Bordello of the early years was it's own outlier thing, the Gogol Bordello of today has evolved into a community that incorporates it's members into the show. Every solos and guest shuttle in an out three ring circus style. The Eugene of the past would have taken the performance to marathon lengths as a three hour focal point with a cast of characters around him. Now he serves more as frontman master of ceremonies. It is a subtle shift that has been happening over the years a members have come, gone, and especially in New York reappear when you least expect it. Gogol was always a family affair even if Eugene shares that what he is doing serves as bit of therepy for childhood issues.
It's nice to see. Gogol Bordello always seemed to embody the positive aspects of multi-culturalism and by nature an aggressively pro-immigrant stance. It was formed back in a time when Moscow and Saint Petersburg were viable cities to play and the big "fear' was that bootlegs of the band might emerge from there. Now, while the world burns itself down and attempts to mandate isolation of it's tribes, Gogol has evolved into a a positive musical bubble of friends and allies using newer NYC acts like Puzzled Panther, Pons and Grace Bergere to utilize different sounds and scenes in a greater context. All the while they continue to dig in to the established tour circuit that is it's bread and butter as worldwide as the world allows such a stance to prosper. In 2026, it still seems indestructable, established and not necessarily radical in a peripheral or aesthetic sense. At least to me, the Casa Gogol ambience is one that is important for NYC to have around.
