Almost everyone around has been around for a while, but there wasn't much nostalgia. More like lifers doing life. First up were the Skull Practitioners who have fast become a band that seems to get on a bill I go to on a regular basis. They have a strong pummel that was reminding me of something out of the Midwest like Hammerhead. They've been around almost as long as Art Gray Noizz Quintet at this point. Knife Thrower are a little bit newer, but hold the presses, they are born of the ashes of the 90's band Skeleton Key. They do more of a dual percussive art skronk sort of thing. It was great to see how AGNQ evolved throughout the decade. They've played bigger shows for example opening for Mudhoney at Warsaw, but this was a packed 280 capacity room of a who's who of the New York noise rock scene. Old friend Ryan Skeleton Boy was excited to play with long time idol Lydia he told me in the weeks leading up to the show, so it was kind of neat to see the 2-string pummeler as a true headliner. Stu Spasm had Lubricated Goat, and garnered television in Australia that made him a bit of a local celebrity certainly in his time in NYC but having a movie about you helps. Lydia Lunch of course is Lydia Lunch. The grand madame of noise rock. She asked the question if you've ever got a video on an iphone that isn't a piece of shit. It's always a bit of a weak transgression to get these 30 second clips, so I kept footage to a minimum. But how often do I get to see Ryan on stage WITH Lydia Lunch? Never before, just a bill. It may happen again someday since she attests to the band being her favorite in NYC. I can't really think of any better active NYC bands. Happy Tenth Anniversay!
