"This place is a museum piece!" intoned the first arrival at the Bowery Electric last night as the room was empty. People came in, so his prediction of an empty house went by the wayside. Stu Spasm's new bands with his wife Dennie (also in the recently written about Loveletter), a sequel to Crunt of sorts (some Crunt covers are done) kicked off the night. Stu claimed they may soon have an instagram page, but for the moment you are just going to have to go by what I tell you.
Dennie had told me about this gig opening for the Hickoids, who I remembered from being on the Toxic Shock label back in the 80's and their album We're Only In It For The Corn. On tour with them also from Austin was a duo that had been together and releasing music over a decade, The Ghost Wolves. Frontwoman Carley Wolf was charming and let the crowd on a trip to Mars!
Hickoids I had never seen in the flesh. I met a couple Germans there who had seen them many times over the years but I never remember even the opportunity to catch them. Despite them being lumped in the "Cowpunk" genre, they weren't afraid to break the unwritten rules of Cowpunk--TWO Elton John covers including their new single "The Bitch Is Back" as well as b-b-b-"Bennie and the Jets." Twin guitar leads and vocals that cut made this more of a rocking affair.
