4:20am Genre Is Death
The 25 in 26 New York Night Train new years was an epic affair. It was already sold out, so I had to go early to get in, having a quick one at the Bonus Room then walking over to Wierfield. The snow from Art Gray melted which was fortunate because I threw on old sneakers tossed in the trash after I got new ones so my still sore left foot could survive a long night.
Toubin had all 3 rooms going dusk to dawn as advertised. I stuck in "the ballroom" for the bands. This meant I missed Bloodshot Bill as Tropa Magica played, otherwise I got to see all the bands. The night kicked off with The Stones whose frontman looks like late 60's John Lennon. That might be the lynchpin of the bandname. The band is supposed to be all stars but I didn't know any of them whether I know their bands or not. They were ok keyboard driven garage rock. Next up were The Flytraps. 3 women rockers with a male drummer doing revved up rock 'n' roll rooted in Motorhead/Lunachicks tougher rocking sort of stuff. I liked them and had no idea of their history or release on Burger Records.
The band that got me out of the house tonight was Ratas En Zelo (Rats In Heat!), the accordian punk rock band with Spanish lyrics. No matter what language, there is nothing better in punk rock to me than a theme song and they have "Ratas." But they they go over the top with the "eee eee eee" complete with a dance everyone can and must do. I somehow hadn't seen this band. I attempted to at the Knockdown Center a couple years ago, but they went on early and I got delayed transfering to the bus down Flushing Ave. I had been meaning to see this band for a couple years at that point, but somehow the stars never allgined until now. Accordionist Hiromy Aranivah leads a double life as an internet celebrity and dance instructor, but in this band her sister Yadee is the front person. Ratas! I salute with claw hands.
Next up were the Paint Fumes from Charlotte, North Carolina. They did a Goner Records sort of thing but they don't have any records on that label. I bet they played the fest at some point but I'm not going to bother and look that up and confirm it. The starts of the night. Bloodshot Bill, who actually has records on Goner as well as a bunch on Norton was next door, but I stayed with the Paint Fumes with my niece comfy wall leaning space.
The stars of the night were Tropa Magica, the Los Angeles based Brazillian psych band. It's good to see a new wave of this stuff rising and popular to kick off the new year after the champagne toast. I have no idea who the secret surprise band were but they did all Stooges covers. Ana Copacabanna did her dancing thing for a couple hours. Somehow, I didn't run into anybody I knew, so at some point I grabbed a sandwich in the hall after going to the packed DJ room in the front for 5 seconds and froze myself outside for a bit. It was too cold to pass out there before a late night Genre is Death set this time, unlike last month, so I managed to be bright eyed and bushy tailed when I walked back in the room while Joseph Keckler was on and witness the 4:20am Genre is Death set in full before deciding it was time for me to fly.
