Originally I had the King Crimson splinter 80's tribute band BEAT on my mind to attend, but my prog show buddy Danny was going to the Brooklyn night in December so I was thinking I'd catch an early gig at Mama Tried then have a lazy Saturday night. However, at said Mama Tried gig, Rich & Darla were plotting a trip to Main Drag to see his friends group Band Antenna. Rich mentioned that Mustafina were also playing, and I since I always like to see them it became clear that I would allow myself to be kidnapped into their night plans. So we took the R from 25th backtracking into Manhattan to switch to the L, then got off at Lorimer to sneak in a chicken sandwich at Commodore. Then and only then could we walk over to Main Drag.
While I was enjoying said chicken sandwich, Rob Conger was busy getting rocking out with Last Throes, whom I wrote about last week at my own gig. I felt bad to seeing a sweaty Rob emerge from his performance as we lingered outside Main Drag, but Rob is gonna rock you no matter who is or isn't in the audience. Anyway Rich's friends band was doing a psych-pop thing that reminded my slightly of Echo and the Bunnymen. Mustafina were continuing being one of the best active bands around town.
One of the events of today was before I left to Mama Tried, I had a phone battery draining Facetime conversation which meant I was already limited with clip 'n snaps. In some ways this is fine, because I was worn out from seeing a sea of amateur phone photographers at Richard Lloyd the night before. I'm always glad in the morning when I go to post them that I have a few things to choose from. Mustafina guitarist Michael Jung is a REAL photographer who shoots rock shows around town in gorgeous black and white. My "aesthetic" is more gutter commando. Michael once reminded me when I forgot to shut the phone autoflash light off at a show that the light didn't help. It was embarrassing because taking the phone out to take a snap is one level of annoyance. Taking a 30-60 second clip is another level off being annoying. Doing it multiple times, which I'm sometimes guilty of for getting content for you, dear reader, is another level of annoyance and I try to have rules like standing against a wall or pillar so I'm not obliterating somebody's view. Accidentally triggering the autoflash light is the first deadly sin of stealth snaps. Multi-minute arm extended "recording" in the middle of the crowd is the next deadly sin. It's anarchy out there!
