Missed: GOONS!

The holy triumverate of modern garage rock had it's two remaining founding lights on stage last night: Lenny Kaye the archivist and Peter Zaremba of the Fleshtones who put their stake in the frat rock revival.   Jeff "Monoman" Connely who passed last week was the third and the Fleshtones payed tribute covering "How Do You Know?" at the start of the first encore.

This show was a celebration of 50 years of Fleshtones.  The 600 capacity room was nearly sold out and it seemed half the room filtered in and out on stage.  The remaining audience managed to keep it together despite audible conversation of their rods and screws giving them issues.  Peter Zaremba kept his grey hair bobbed and glossy and could do his spins and points with ease.  For 50 years the band aged well and Lenny Kaye noted his anniversaries tacked on another decade.

The Minus 5, the long running Portland collective now feature the Young Fresh Fellows' Scott McCaughey along with REM's Peter Buck & Mike Mills, Steve Wynn from the Dream Syndicate, guitarist Kurt Block and drummer Linda Pitmon.  I got there as GOONS! were wrapping up their masked set with "Money (That's What I Want)" to raucous jeers.
