I had it in my head that I wanted to see The Thing, but I already saw them this year at the end of a long bill at Our Wicked Lady last January.  They are doing a residency at Nightclub 101 (the Knitting Factory's new NYC venue formerly Baker Falls formerly the Pyramid for many many years.  Since NYC is the city that now sleeps, this was the only show I could go to after Los Mirlos at Lincoln Center since the doors were 10pm.  I noticed  The Thing are opening for Jon Spencer in Staten Island Saturday along with SKORTS who were also on the Our Wicked Lady bill I saw.

So anyway, The Thing were not to be confused with the legendary Noiseville recording artist from the early 90's that I saw on Houston St. at the Spiral before I moved to NYC.  No, this is some other The Thing that probably weren't even born when I saw that show.  Since that The Thing existed 1991-2, you can't blame this one for hijacking the name.  I guess.

What you can blame the Thing for is not having very good songs.  They play well, they play enthusiastically, they have a nice full room on a Thursday night residency full of Bros and the girls that love them.  They sort of remind me of a Detroit band Tee Pee put out 20 years ago, The High Strung.  Rutting male rock except they had much better material.

As for Jesus Christ Taxi Driver, I got there for the last 2 songs.  I didn't realize they were all the way from Denver.  I guessed they were just another local bro band playing for a local young crowd.  They would like to be lumped in with Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, but they are lacking some fundamentals that simply make that impossible unless you count their reprise of Jon's "Number One in..." schtick.  Plus their lyrics were a laudry list of anti-religious diatribe.  They want to give you a laudry list of the failings of Christ as interpreted by man.  I'm all ears to a point, but they started to sound like they were reading off somebody's manifest.
