4:30pm Scary On The Wall
Today was the first of two benefit all day shows this weekend for the long running club Our Wicked Lady. I'm not sure what $10K or whatever they raise will do to solve whatever problem they have in this wacky world of real estate that is NYC in general, but hopefully it will help.
I went primarily to check out Frida Kill since they were recommended, and I wanted to check out the massive bill of local bands I hadn't seen yet. The whole show got livestreamed and is linked from the top. Checking stuff out over an 8 hour stretch is a long day, but I saw the whole thing start to finish.
Scary On The Wall kicked off the day in a sitdown acoustic Alice In Chains set. Then Frida Kill did feminist punk with three different vocalists trading off on songs. Pons were electro punk with two vocalists and a live drummer. Eclectic Charango Beats jammed. WifeKnife were the house band doing female fronted punk rock. Joudy had a Meat Puppets/Flaming Lips vibe.
SKORTS is a name I've been seeing around a ton lately and the same person that recommended Frieda Kill had mentioned them as a curio he had yet to see. They do ethereal harmony shoegaze type stuff and seem like they could evolve to something much bigger.
Grumpers did a straight forward punk rock set reminiscent of British Oi! They also seemed like they could establish themselves worldwide.
I had no idea Sugar Pit were part of the Psy-Sound LA collective masterminded by Chloe Chaidez. Somehow her posts pop up like every five Instagram video doomscroll feeds, but I wasn't expecting her to be in the same room. Of course, her being on stage overshadows the actual featured songwriter, but that's showbiz.
The Thing wrapped it up doing a grunge thing.
