Missed: Paradise Lost

I won a pair of tickets for two shows in one night, so I did split duty between Le Poisson Rouge and Knockdown Center.  I hadn't seen the current constitution of Trouble that classic era guitarists Rick Wartell and Bruce Franklin have put together, so no time like the present.  I did see vocalist Kyle Thomas on stage around 1999 on a trip to Maryland.  At the time I didn't know Eric Wagner was out. I did get to see a classic lineup reunion Trouble with Wagner circa 2008 at BB Kings, and saw the classic lineup in it's day many times in the 90's opening for Danzig on the North Shore in Boston and Pantera in Worcester and there were some other times as well. Eric and bass player Ron Holzner went on to be The Skull until Eric's passing on the road a few years back and now Ron has Legions of Doom.

Trouble today is like seeing Tony Iommi doing Black Sabbath or Greg Ginn doing Black Flag with new players, except you have 2 guitarists that played on the 80's and 90's albums and a more stable lineup with the vocalist on the last album from 2013, The Distortion Field.  Bruce & Rick shared bass duties on that album but Rob Hultz has been a member since 2013.  Drummer Mark Lira put 15 years into the band from 2008-2023 but has been recently replaced by Garry Naples.  That said, I didn't overanalyze it too much, had a little whiskey and enjoyed the set.

Opener Northern Heretic have a long local pedegree stretching back to the drummer being from Electric Frankenstein.  This band mines the slow sludge noise rock territory, and I thought they were good.  I missed Paradise Lost even though I was a little curious I decided to get to Obituary in time, and I knew they had a 10:30 curfew.
