Long running UK band The Charlatans came back to Brooklyn Steel. This was the third time I've seen them, each one because my friend Kenny from Boston was in town. We even hang out in the same spot outside the doors on the right side of the stage. Kenny would have blown this show off if the CBGB's Festival he came down for hadn't been canceled due to the Nor'easter, but what the hell why not keep a modern tradition.
The thing that sets the Charlatans apart is the Hammond Organ. They aren't a greatest hits band and do a healthy amount from their new album We Are Love. Founding bass player Martin Blunt is the longest standing member and vocalist Tim Burgess is not far behind. Guitarist Mark Collins joined in 1991 and keyboardist Tony Rogers came aboard later in the 90's.
For whatever reason, even after seeing this band three times, I can never remember any of their material. Tellin' Stories is the album that gets 4 out of 21 songs, same as the new one. From that one you get the title track, "How High," "North Country Boys" and "One To Another." They spread out tracks from 8 different albums for this show. I've found the band enjoyable enough to go see them a few times in recent years. Isn't that really all you want?
