This was a "Downtown NYC" lineup of primarily 80's stalwarts that have kept going all these decades. The current version of King Missile (there have been 4) is the first King Missile (Dog Fly Religion) with of course John S. Hall but also Dogbowl on dropped Flying-V, knocked out of tune and replaced by a small rectangular body guitar. I hadn't seen any version of King Missile since 1990 at Bunratty's in Allston, MA. The think I remembered from 35 years ago was John reading his lyrics from a long piece of paper. Sure enough that stance was replicated. True nostalgia! They did a super fast version of their song "Sensitive Artist" that was almost unrecognizable except John said something later in the set confirming the song was indeed played fast. My other favorite of yore, "If Only" was also played.
Engineer extrodinaire Wharton Tiers has been doing the Ensemble at least 30 years (he said 30 on stage anyway) but of course he goes back to the 70's no-wave era with Theoretical Girls. He drums as front man and has his cast of guitarists (and Matt Hunter on bass) circle around him. Always enjoyable and generally driving without meandering into experimental land. If you want that, Bob Bert's new band with Tim Dahl and Mark Morgan provided that. Less a "band" than three guys having a blow for the first set of the night.
