Had an unexpected trip to see "shoegaze pioneers" Drop Nineteens who I ignored completely in Boston during their 1990-1995 initial run. My Land-Line cohort got on the list so we met up for a few rounds at Cobra Club and walked over to Elsewhere to catch their 9:30 headlining set. Nowadays these third-tier Amerindie bands of the 90's have a bit of rejuvenation, especially the American bands that were heavily influenced by the earlier British 80's Creation Records bands. Now they are considered influential to the "Shoegaze" genre, which has become a more pronounced splinter subgenre of indie rock. I remember the album cover of Delaware well, I can't remember if I played it on the radio or not. The scuttlebutt around town in their day was they were a careerist B.U. band in a town that already had My Bloody Swirlies. I don't think I dug any deeper than that to refute or confirm, so I went into this show cleaning the slate with open ears since they have 35 years since inception. The neophytes became veterans.
Since I went in not knowing or remembering a note of the band's music, I thought they were pretty good at what they did. Sort've like my reaction to Slowdive last year. Not quite that good, but fine to watch for a set. Wall of guitars, male-female vocals and genre tempo all the way through. Better than alot of things I suppose.
