Although they did most of their significant albums (for me Different Class & This Is Hardcore, which encompassed almost half this show), Pulp are not yet a "nostalgia band." They are touring on a new album, More. Since I hadn't heard the album before the show, I'll have to say the ones I remembered were "Got To Have Love" and the show closer "A Sunset" mostly because it was the announced show closer.
Pulp is one of those auto-critic bands which every release is sure to be in the year end lists on Mojo and Uncut. I will put money down that More. will be on those lists at the end of November before I even hear the album. I can't think of a Pulp album that hasn't since Different Class and maybe His 'n Hers. I get it, Jarvis Cocker is quality and has a well-worn distinctive vocal style. Very British, very conversational and one of the better modern sighs of the past few decades. For a very long stretch I stuck with them in terms of buying their releases but somehow never saw the band until now. They were always on my bucket list but winning tickets sealed the deal on this one. The tale of the tape of course is what the band plays: 6 from Different Class, 5 from the new one, a couple from This Is Hardcore and a handful from the rest. At least that tells you where the band thinks they are at.
When I got to my first won seat on the side up in heaven, Hamilton Leithauser was on. I only got to see a few songs so it's hard to say anything not knowing the Walkmen very well. The venue passed out new tickets to the section with better sightlines, so I went from a very spasely attended area to a very crowded row which indeed had a better sightline. I was politely informed when I tried to take my seat that the seats didn't matter by the person that was sitting in it and with a few bleachers empty in front that ended up being the case, but I had to play musical chairs a few times until at last, I got the end of a row, uninterrupted by leaners, cell phone standers and leg grabbers for no apparent reason. Then and only then was the new and improved sightline upon the common people appreciated.
