McDonald's themed Black Sabbath cover band Mac Sabbath are one of those "exist for the spectacle" bands. They are 10 years in on a 10 year tour. I last saw them a 5 plus years ago, but my friend Eric had a free pair of tickets and originally the Dickies were opening. They canceled last week and Guttermouth replaced them. I never saw them and Eric was intrigued by the first band Flummox so we met up at the renowned Peculiar Pub and made our way over to LPR early.
Flummox had just started when we got there and they had a couple headless guitars and Primus like tendencies minus the funk emphasis if that makes sense. Nth Zappa derivative without the direct influence? They asked the audience about Mr. Bungle, then disavowed them but covered "Travolta." Apparently, there wasn't as much stage show in this early slot that they usually have but I had nothing else to compare them to.
Guttermouth were "funnypunk" and reminded me of a West Coast New Bomb Turks. They've been around since 1989 but somehow I never saw them before. They were ok.
Mac Sabbath seem to throw in more musical jokes from other bands now. I seem to remember them only doing Black Sabbath parodies but now they have a reoccurring Cake gag and parodied Iron Maiden as well. I guess they need some variety after 10 years in the same costumes, but they are great costumes.
