Lords of Chaos subject Mayhem headlined the 2025 edition of the Decibel Magazine tour. Original founders Dead and Euronymous are long deceased but make up the lore that the band plays up in video tribute throughout the show. Singer Dead committed suicide and Euronymous was murdered by Burzum so long ago that Burzum has been out of prison after service a maximum (in Norway) 21 year sentence of which he served 15 and was released in 2009. The original rhythm section of bassist Necromancer and drummer Hellhammer carry on with vocalist Attila Csihar. Attila came from the 80's band Tormentor and contributed vocals on De Mysteriis Dom Sathanis released in 1994, but he didn't perform live with the band until a decade later. They are recently joined by guitarists Teloch (previously of Orcustus) and Ghul (a Brit named Charles Hedger who played with Cradle of Filth). It's interesting how Mayhem evolved into a credible headliner completely different from the underground band it evolved from before the tabloid events made them famous and ultimately were incorporated into the stage show. A tribute act in tribute to themselves. Nobody sees Mayhem for the new record. In fact, the "new record" this year is a double vinyl release of 1986 demos.
Mortiis I saw headline last year and appreciated that he added a percussionist to his show. This made his organ less droney even if he is doing the exact same thing at the end of the day. I also saw golden costumed prog-ists Imperial Triumphant last year. I liked them then and I still thought they were good upon second viewing. I did not know they've been around 20 years. "New Band" on the bill, the 7-year New Skeletal Faces whose Southern California city can never be named. They did a Glam/Goth take on Black Metal. Every 5th person in the audience at this point had face paint that looked like the dog I walked last week. That dog would bite the shit out of those posers if they tried to leash him!
