I took a short walk over to Purgatory, the music venue on the opposite direction of Central Ave. It's a cool space I somehow never set foot in on the opposite direction of the Wilson L train that I walk home from every God damn day. The music room is great, boxy with stairs and looks about 100 capacity. I'm doing a little bit of scouting this weekend for a trial booking run at a bar near the Jefferson L and I heard Prints were someone to check out, so here I am.
I last saw Jenny Alien a couple years ago on a bill with Vanya's kids band Beeyotch. I remembered I liked her and remembered her song "Corner Store." It starts with chips! Who could forget that? A couple years on Jenny should be a star. I'm serious, she has total front person command. The show was set up ostensibly for the video release of her new song "Stupid Girl." Stupid Girl in a Stupid World and everyone gets set on fire. Bravo!
Prints went on last. They rocked it, as usual my friend Eric was right in his recommendations. Vocalist Clem Iris had a strong vocal and wore shit kicker shoes. How would I know this important detail? Well, she had a friend named OJ in the crowd and jumped off the stage to rile him up. I was a short distance away and got a feel of that very solid shoe in my shin. Let's just say I would not advise being on the other end of that foot!
Talon played their brand of "girlfriend rock" of mostly originals plus a shot at Dobie Gray's "Slip Away." I liked them also. The scheduled opener Abbie From Mars canceled, and someone named Brice opened with an electronic set with audience participation. Poking around I THINK it was called Altimetry since there is some history with another bill at the venue half a year ago. If it was some other Brice doing a one-person electronic set, my mistake.
