Stereo MC's are doing a quick 3 show run of Philadelphia/Brooklyn/Cambridge presumably for 40th anniversary dates. This was their first time in NYC in over 20 years. Their breakthrough album Connected from 1992 was the feature and they also went back to their 1989 debut 33-45-78. They totally ignored their last album Emperor's Nightingale from 2011.
Outside of "Connected" the song, I didn't really know anything by or about Stereo MC's. My friend got comp tickets and offered me the plus one, so I went with an open mind. That said, I thought Stereo MC's were surprisingly good. What makes this group is long time singer Cath Coffey, the singer with Kenyan heritage who goes nonstop the whole show. The DJ Nick Hallam looks ancient behind his laptops and with the original drummer Owen If deceased, session drummer Tansay Omar has a set-up with 2 snares, 2 congas and electronic drum pads in the middle. Focal point Rob B aka Rob Birch has a gristled look about him befitting of a 40 year veteran.
While the sound was very early 90's given the material, there was something refreshing about the performance. They kicked off the dates with an appearance on Jimmy Fallon.
Alex English x Croystatik are party DJ's that have been doing opening slots for different shows in recent years. What they do is primarily DJ club mood music before the gig. Nostalgia dance shows this makes sense since the audience just wants to see their band and get out of there, so they might as well have a visual of active DJ's on the stage as opposed music playing over the PA for two hours before showtime.
Stereo MC's wrap it up at the Sinclair in Cambridge tonight.
