I checked in on Joanna Sternberg's Holiday Spectacular. I thought my old friend Mary Lou Lord, who has been a big fan and supporter of Joanna's for years, was going to show up for a song or two, but she got sick and canceled and I missed her Facebook post to this effect. Joanna did the Elliott Smith song "I Figured You Out" that they were supposed to duet on.
I hadn't seen Sternberg since around a year ago at Union Pool during a residency month. I liked the material then and remembered much of it a year later. I appreciated seeing a bunch of artists doing one (or maybe a couple) songs. This is a great format for trying to see a bunch of people you don't know, because since everyone has time constraints, they are putting their best foot forward. I really only knew Josephine Network of all the people on the bill. Out of everyone else, Jackie West stood out for me and sure enough she has an album out. Jeffrey Lewis, even only doing two songs, seemed the most "pro" out of the Friends portion of the show and sure enough he has the biggest discography.
Before playing, Joanna brought out her Dad who seemed happy to take the spotlight covering Carl Perkins and The Beatles as well as Chuck Berry's "Little Queenie." Hamming it up with Joanna's bass accompaniment and her brother drumming. After this Joanna played a band set and a short solo one. Then it was time for an extended jam with all the players on the stage for "The Weight." Things then devolved into "Wild Thing" and "Louie Louie" as the room cleared out.
I suspect Joanna would've played another few hours with 5 people remaining from a full Bowery Ballroom as long as there were willing musicians on stage. Having brought a crowd, there were no shackles on jamming out like it was a house party. Refreshing on a certain level to see people making music because they are having fun doing it and really no other reason.
