Phew, finished all the links on Desertfest NYC's first day. Sticking to the format takes forever when there is this many bands, hence the publishing delay. I've still got the final day to work on, so forgive me if I uploaded the wrong clips, I'll fix them if I catch anything wrong with the phone upload. There's tons of better shot stuff on YouTube and the expert on this genre, The Obilisk has posted his day reports so I don't have to. He has fancier photos and more extensive commentary than my approach, so just take my two cents as of the "opinions are like assholes" variety. This blog is more for at a glance research and general overview, not a publicists outhouse or kneeling fanboy. That said, places like The Obilisk and The Quietus are "expert" pages that have my complete respect whether I agree or not and want a trusted opinion along with the generic links above. I'm trying to do something a little different here-- cheap, fast and off-the-cuff and let others get down 'n' dirty.
High On Fire of course were by far the best band of the day, but that isn't fair because Matt Pike is on the Mount Rushmore of the Stoner Rock genre. They are just on a different plane than everyone else. Looking into the expected chart position of Cometh The Storm, I was shocked that #21 on the physical sales chart didn't mean the record made the Billbaord 200 like 5 previous albums did including a couple debuts at #63.
Since I was doing merch for Tee Pee all weekend, I couldn't watch whole sets and give everyone my full attention that I am trying to do for this blog. That said, I did enjoy my fellow Poles, Belzebong that my friend Mark Maloof was raving about from seeing them at Psycho Vegas. I could only pop into Deathchant for a short bit, but their new release I was streaming their new one this morning while working on these links--I think Kenny told me he liked them alot with their Lizzy leads. I'll be sure to check them out again.
Everybody else I caught a song or two and got a 30 set clip and some burst snaps, so what you see is what you get of that.
Expect more of the same for the next day. That one adds a third stage with an earlier start time, so that might take a couple days for me to finish.
