Guitar Summit is the long running culmination of the upstate guitar camp Alternative Guitar Summit. My friend Danny that had a free extra ticket for me, let me know that this years program was more jazz-centric than other Guitar Summit programs in the past. That's not to say there wasn't variety in style and approach.
This years star player, Nels Cline was an established avant-jazz player for many years before he joined Wilco. However, in this circle, everyone on the bill has established themselves as a recording artist with substantive discographies. The spirit of a show like this creates various collaborations throughout the 2 1/2 hour show in celebration of a weeks camp well done. This may mean originals or it may mean a cover by Horace Silver or Jimmy Giuffre.
The styles stretched from Muthspiel's acoustic to Shobhakar's 60 cycle Indian drone with two percussionists to Hekselman's ambience to Meza vocal to solo excursions to hard bop anchored by rock versed players Harris (Living Colour briefly toward their start, more known for Sonny Rollins) and Sorgen (Hot Tuna).
A couple of the artists announced had Covid cancellations: Joel Harrison and I believe Ben Perowsky. I don't think I remember seeing either Mike or Leni Stern either. People were on and off stage, so maybe I missed someone.
Quite a bit to take in and it is just a taste really.
